How to draw like Andy Warhol: Studio Club Private Blog
On Friday I went to see the exhibition of Andy Warhol's fabric designs at the Dovecot Gallery in Edinburgh (I've put the photos I took in this gallery). It was a fascinating show - not least because it gave a glimpse into Warhol's technique and how he used what I would think of as 'tricks' to simplify the design process.
Some designs were done with rubber stamps - some bought, some made from carved erasers - and others were done with a simple transfer process using tracing paper.
This was the technique which gave what we think of as a 'Warhol line' from 1950s, slightly fragmented, broken, soft. You can see it in these tumbling acrobats from a large scale fabric border.
So as soon as I got home I started to work out exactly how he did it - it took a while to get it to work, but this is how I reproduced that line in the end . . . . .
