Exploring Botanically Dyed Threads
Harvesting
All of the colours that I use to dye the threads are either grown in my dye garden or harvested from the hedge, woods and meadow that surround my Studio.
Though I do grow traditional dye plants like dyer's chamomile and madder, I am most interested in plants - like Sweet Cicely and Bracken - which are accidental dye plants. Plants which give good, strong colourfast tones which have been forgotten about over the centuries.
Dyeing
I have a dye deck built onto the back of my studio.
There I can experiment with dyeing yarn, fabrics and threads. I particularly enjoy dyeing cotton threads as they take up so little space and they are practical things that can be used for mending, embroidery and even trying up parcels.
Getting ready for sale
When the threads are dyed, washed and dried I wind them into little balls and pack them into sets.
This limited edition gift set of embroidery threads is dyed with the best of the late summer dye plants.
