White curvy jug - Johnson Brothers
The shape of this jug is absolutely beautiful - the billowing curve just perfect to set off any generous bunches of flowers - roses, sunflowers, dahlias.
The rim is decorated with a simple design in lime green and terracotta.
It isn't an exquisitely produced jug - the joining line where the two halves of the mould have been put together is visible at the front, the base is slightly wobbly - but I like it all the better for that.
It was made by Johnson brothers in Staffordshire and probably dates from late C19th. Their aim was to produce wares that looked like fine china but had the durability of iron stoneware, and this combination of affordability, durability and elegant appearance made them especially popular in the US.
