Natural Dyeing with Food Waste: May Studio Companion

For May’s Stitched tutorial, this kit brings together the materials I used to dye threads and silk using food waste—onion skins, tea bags, avocado stones and more.

It’s not a course in a box. It’s a companion. A small gathering of good materials, ready to meet whatever’s on your kitchen counter.

Everything is chosen for ease and beauty: thread that takes colour well, cloth that loves a natural dye pot, modifiers that open up a full spectrum.

There are only a few kits—just enough for those who’d like to follow along without having to source ingredients or prep fabric.

Kit includes:

• 3 mini skeins of wool/silk embroidery thread, pre-mordanted with aluminum potassium sulphate
• 1 mini skein of cotton embroidery thread
• 3 wooden thread spools
• 1 piece of pre-mordanted silk (20 x 20 cm)
• 1 piece of pre-mordanted silk chiffon (20 x 20 cm)
• Ferrous sulphate modifier
• Sodium carbonate
• pH indicator strips
