It’s funny, until now I thought the curse of “busyness” hit me in adulthood; being a single parent, juggling work and home, feeling like you have to make it all seem effortless… in my 30s it felt like a badge we all had to wear. Reflecting now I can see the echoes of childhood in the sentiment having been brought up by my grandmother who always promised she “would give me something to do” if caught bored or doing nothing, that meant the tedious tasks of 1970s housework that still included things like polishing brass! It’s a shame that it often takes necessity to slow us down, and give ourselves permission to just be still. Like you Jane I can be focused and get things done that genuinely need doing but the rest is now much more relaxed.

Gosh Jane, what a really super post. Isn't it dreadful how one ill concieved comment by 'someone who should know better' can have such a negative impact.... conversely how powerful and positive was the insightful suggestion from another.
I absolutely agree with the reference to the Busy Olympics. Before I retired (ridiculous word and concept because of course I only retired from the rat race!) I remember how that was such a thing. It was viewed as a crime not to be busy juggling all the balls at once. However, this need not to be lazy (the devil makes work etc) is so ingrained in us and I do still struggle with being seen to be doing nothing. Must try harder! x

In reply to Jo VanEvery
would have loved to read it. The bottom line is, we always make time for the things we really want to do, so if someone says to me, I'd luv to meet up but I am just way too busy.....i tell them this...... another anecdote: when i first moved to Lake Como someone from Milano at a cocktail party here asked me, "what do you do?", i replied i don't "do" anything!!!!! (she obviously didn't work with her hands!)

Omg. So glad you managed to sort it. The word busy or “too busy” etc drives me nuts. Colleagues on a Friday would always ask, “what are you DOING on the weekend?”, the answer “nothing” would bring looks of sadness or dismay as I was on my own. After serious thought I found my perfect answer…..”hugging my home”.

This is beautiful! And yes, lazy is a judgement.

There is a book about the history, which is unsurprisingly connected to colonialism and slavery, Laziness Does Not Exist (link to description on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/54304124-laziness-does-not-exist)

I love how you note that the things we do to avoid being judged lazy are often inefficient and/or ineffective.
