So interesting and though provoking Jane and humorous! I'm happy to change the word Jack to the much better word of Jill and to continue with all my trades (interests and hobbies), mastering (enjoying) as many as I can. Much of the fun, for me, is in gathering the supplies needed for a new interest, feeling and smelling them, looking at them on the shelf :) I noticed and am fascinated by the crazy quilt you have on your chair Jane .. Hope we get a tour of it.. please :) x

This is a very interesting topic! For the last few years I've been trying to "find that One thing" that will occupy all my attention and focus, which I will excel at and love until the day I die. Why haven't I found it? Why do I have so many different creative avenues without time for them all? Not too long ago I realized it is ok to enjoy a variety of creative activities, all at once, here or there, put-off for years and restarted. It is all ok!

This discovery started with a spinning wheel which had been sitting for a few years along with some fleece. I decided to spin with the Tour de Fleece on Ravelry - spin during the Tour de France (ha, ha, spin...) Anyway, my goal was to get back to spinning or decide the wheel could go to another home. It made me feel bad (guilty?) sitting there without being used. Well, I enjoyed, and am continuing to enjoy the spinning. No every day now, but consistently.

During the time spent spinning I thought about my sewing. This is the second part to this realization - I've sewn using a machine since I was about 10. Everyday, no. Would I ever give up my sewing machine -No! It is a part of me. I have a sewing room to use whenever I get the urge. Do I feel guilty about it, No. What bothered me was all the fabric sitting there saying "sew me, sew me, why haven't you sewn me"! It was guilt about unsewn projects, money spent and not put into use. So, if I can sew for more than 50 years, not every day, why does any other creative endeavor need to occupy every day all day?

I tend to jump in with both feet and get everything needed for what ever new project I'm working on or skill I'm learning. This is what needs to be reined-in a bit, not the curiosity and desire to learn new things. Maybe the curiosity and desire to learn are "the things" that I have, and have had, all my life. Hmm, this is a new thought for me and deserves further consideration! Thank you Jane!!

In reply to Deb Bamford
I’m a serial obsessive- it’s currently crazy patchwork and 1840s knitting books! However I do think that someone who is learning and communicates well is the best teacher- and that may be someone who has been doing something for decades and is open to learning or it may be someone relatively new (not someone who has learned on TikTok- that’s a different argument). I’ve certainly been to some terrible workshops led by amazing textile artists who missed out so many steps because they took them for granted. It could also be that some people are natural teachers and some aren’t. J x

I think I'm the opposite to you - I am an obsessive and I have definitely said " no" to so many things along the way! I don't think either way is right or wrong - certainly not in the present day, but I do think that if you want to learn something to be able to produce a good product it is the skilled teacher you should go to not the person who is currently starting and making the mistakes. If you are having a play at lots of different things then that is a totally different matter. On the subject of perfume, I also thought you were supposed to get yourself a signature perfume - but I've not found 1 yet that I like enough to say "that's me!" - it depends on mood, time of month and oh so many other factors - have lots to choose from, not just 1!!
