In reply to Bryonna D
I am pretty sure now - esp after the Studio Bee on Friday - that I am going to take the dress apart very carefully in order to find out how it was made from the shawl.
And I’ll be able to take a pattern from it and save any bits of fabric that can be saved at the same time.
I will need a completely clear studio and a free day though as I think I’ll put out two parallel tables and have one with my grid and some large tracing paper and the other with the dress.

In reply to Kathie Hoyer
The insertion stitches were a very common way of embroidering lingerie and things like napkins - it is embroidery stitches holding together two hemmed pieces of fabric in a light, secure and fancy way (it comes under the category of fancy stitching ) - and they are very neat as on show!

In reply to SnapdragonJane
Jane, could you put a very light fusible interfacing under the shredding parts (maybe most or all of the dress) to hold the fabric together so you could take a pattern from it, and sort of preserve it? Of course you couldn't see the underside anymore.

This is so beautiful, Jane ... so well photographed ! (as is everything you do). I appreciate you explaining the little details with a corresponding pic ... something I would have missed on my own just looking at it. I love the embroidered fabric. It reminded me I have a yard or so of unknown green fabric with velvety leaves in my stash. Haven't sewn for years (I just admire my stash), but this may be the impetus for me to start again. I'm thinking about it :) ?? ??
